What is a 3 on 3?
At its most basic level, a 3 on 3 is just two groups of three players playing hockey. 3 on 3's are much more than that though. Because of the small area and the small number of players, 3 on 3's force kids to work on skills that are normally not emphasized when playing on a large sheet of ice with a large number of players. A good starting list would be composed of:
  • Puck control skills
  • Shooting
  • Passing
  • Stamina
  • Communication
  • "Hockey Sense"
That is a very large list, but 3 on 3's work on almost everything the game has to offer. Because of the small area that you're playing in you will be shooting a lot, passing a lot, and skating a lot. The main goal really is to make sure the other team never gets the puck. To do this, you must practice and develop your puck control, passing, communication, and hockey sense. You have to see the whole ice and know where everybody is at all times.
